East Riding Youth Dance

ARTIST - GOOLE
Gemma Barker

I have been a dancer for the majority of my life covering many genres of dance. I moved to college to study Performing Arts, Theatre Studies and Dance. I then joined Leap Dance Company in Hull for two years. In the second year I became head workshop leader and toured with the company around the Yorkshire regions. I gained more experience as a professional dancer and backing dancer, and had the chance to tour.

I then moved to Scottish School of Contemporary dance in Dundee, I became principal dancer whilst I was there. I then continued to teach in Hull as an outreach dance teacher, after school clubs and community centres. I am now a Dance development worker for a dance project with the British Heart Foundation. This past year I have been the dance artist for East Riding Youth Dance Hessle Group. I love to pass on my experience to the next generation, create dance pieces, and teach them within a professional environment, and have lots of fun at the same time.

I live in Cottingham with my partner and three children. I have worked as a play development officer for many years working for the local authority and am currently changing career and studying for a PGCE in Primary Education. I studied dance as part of my degree and love watching contemporary dance performances. I think youth dance is a great activity for young people to get involved in whatever their skills and I am looking forward to being part of East Riding Youth Dance and supporting the Goole Youth Dance Group.
